And while I was taking screenshots of those, I got an email about this one…

I swear there’s a cloned and slightly demented version of me out there making half-baked 31Three esqe websites. I think this cloned-me needs a name. Any ideas?

Update
My clone has apologized and has learned a hard lesson. Part of me wants to leave the post up as a warning to others, but a bigger part of me knows that I’ve crossed the line in the past myself, and I ought to extend some grace here. I’ve deleted a few comments that linked back to his site… my apologies to the authors of those comments.

Don’t worry about when they rip you off, worry when they stop!

It’s a very backhanded compliment?

The clincher is the brilliant use of the Brush Script Typeface as the only spec of original design on the rip of your old site.

Top Drawer old Chums.

Wow. That’s awful. I had to send them an e-mail, I couldn’t resist.

Somehow these rip-off are so extreme, that it’s actually funny (at least, when you’re not the one being ripped off). Why stop at copying one of your designs, when you can copy both your company page and half your porfolio. :-)

It does show one thing though. The devil is in the details. Even though so much is copied directly something still seems off. These sites are in another leaque than the originals.

Ha ha. But it’s all your fault :P. You design such a wonderful sites, the newbie could not resist copying it.

But ofcourse, it’s pathetic and a shame on the person.

Apart from that, I am craving to have a look at your latest works since mobilewebdesign. When’s the next post due?

How about Messe Bennett-Mameberlain, for the poor job at cloning! I guess if they could really design, they would have been able to do it from the first place :P

Good attitude about it all Jesse :)

hey Jesse, you need these guys… you should actually enjoy this feeling of leading these design newbies.

I am sure once they are polished, they’d be (i hope) thankful to you for their living..

All the best,

Messe Bennett-Mamberlain from 32Three… I love it!

I’m continually impressed by your class. :)

I have a subscription to your rss feed, and I must say that the long silent period had me concerned.

It seems that your popularity is near rock-star status. You are consistently finding yourself victim to sometimes comical clones of your site. So much that, by the time I opened your post, the images and links to the most recent perpetrator’s work have been removed. If I (a frequent visitor to your site) missed the boat, they could not have been there long. Kudos to you sir!

Obviously enough people communicated the flagrant “borrowing” of your concepts/design were unbecoming of any professional (or novice) in our line of work.

In any case, keep fighting the good fight. I look forward to the days that I can post about people copying my work.

Best regards,

Steve Fuller

I understand how it feels when somebody copies your content or design. Its something we cannot do much about in this huge WWW. It is a human tendency to get fascinated by good stuff and this weakness makes him to do such stupid things.

I am not sure about the extent to which that guy or team copied your stuff (as screenshots have been removed) but I know it must be quite painful and irritating.

We all are great admirers of your work and always try to learn new things from it but one should not cross that limit.

BTW is there any international law for such sort of crimes?

I’ve had a couple people copy my sites as well. One was an exact copy of my site in Italy. The only reason I found out was because I started getting strange results in my Google Analytics reports. Turns out the guy copied the code exactly, including my tracking code. It was a hassle to get him to at least remove my tracking code.

There’s also a UK site (fastdeedpoll.co.uk) that copied a good portion of my design for my wedding website (www.janeandronnie.com). They never changed it. I’m guessing some designer got paid to rip off my design, which sucks, but what can you do? What made it worse was people accusing me of copying their design.

I’ve had a similar issues, most recently with someone taking a Squarespace layout I created and porting it to WordPress. He credited me in the footer, but he didnt ask, and as I was paid by Squarespace to create it, they held the copyright.

Some people may not realize they could actually be costing a good designer future work. I can completely see a situation where a client sees their design on another site, and the designer credited in the footer, and come to the wrong conclusion (like in Ronnie’s example.)

I’m growing tired of the old “it’s a compliment” and “it’s the web, it’s just too easy” response when things like this happen. So if you wandered into an art gallery and realized they didn’t have any type of security, would it then be ok for you to steal a painting? Would it be a compliment to the artist?

Has anyone noticed the similarities in the 31three.com website and the screen graphics for the American Idol tv show.
They’ve overlayed similar stripes as the 31three background on some of the titles and graphics, I’ve been noticing it for a couple weeks now, and wondered just where I had seen that style before ;)
